At Recursion, we combine experimental biology, automation and artificial intelligence to quickly and efficiently identify treatments for human diseases. The Support Engineer is an entry level programming role that should be able to understand software systems and processes and be eager for the opportunity to help monitor and troubleshoot production software.
We run experiments which currently generate 15-20 terabytes of data per week. As we increase the capacity of our high throughput screening operations this may grow to 80 terabytes of data per week within a year. This data is processed and the results are used to determine which diseases to study, which drugs to move forward, and which experiments to run the following week. While our engineering team is constantly working to increase the scale and reliability of our data processing pipeline, failures and unexpected use cases arise that need to be addressed in a timely manner to meet our weekly deadlines.
THE PROBLEMS YOU’LL SOLVE
As a support engineer you’ll triage pipeline errors, fix some failures and escalate others to the data engineering team, and work with biologists to get their bespoke experiments processed. When the pipeline is running well, you may help to establish better metrics and monitoring, build tooling to ease detection and remediation of error states, or take on other engineering or devops tasks.

WHAT WE DO
We have raised over $80M to apply machine learning to one of the most unique datasets in existence - over a petabyte of imaging data spanning more than 10 billion cells treated with hundreds of thousands of different biological and chemical perturbations, generated in our own labs - in order to find treatments for hundreds of diseases. Our long term mission is to decode biology to radically improve lives and we want to understand biology so well that we can fix most things that go wrong in our bodies. Our data scientists and machine learning researchers work on some of the most challenging and interesting problems in computational drug discovery, and collaborate with some of the brightest minds in the deep learning community (Yoshua Bengio is one of our advisors), who help our machine learning team design novel ways of tackling these problems.
