At Recursion, we combine experimental biology, automation, and artificial intelligence to quickly and efficiently identify treatments for human diseases. Our approach to scalable, high-dimensional biology allows us to discover potential treatments for many diseases at a rapid pace. Our Disease Biology team identifies advanced and biologically-relevant in vitro models, across a number of therapeutic areas, and then uses advanced high-dimensional assays to push the boundaries of our platform.



Our Disease Biology team is a scientifically-curious and driven group that performs disease validation assays in support of prioritization of compound hits for further research and development. As a Research Associate, you will be responsible for the execution, analysis, and reporting on multiple concurrent experiments. This will involve the use of traditional wet-bench techniques, tissue culture, microscopy, and various liquid handling machinery to help develop novel assays.

  • Bachelor’s of Science, Master’s of Science or equivalent in cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology or related field
  • 2-3 years of experience in tissue culture and basic molecular lab techniques are a must.  Experience with automation, assay development, assay validation, and experimental design strongly desired. We count Master’s thesis research work and hands-on lab research as applicable experience
  • An ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Proven interpersonal communication and writing skills (experimental reporting)

We start with various human cell types in our automated laboratory, where we perturb biology 100k different ways each week (e.g. model a disease of interest, add a chemical compound, or some combination of those). We image the resulting cells using high throughput microscopy, resulting in about 2 million new images or greater than 20 terabytes of data each week. These data are analyzed using computer vision and machine learning methods that help us measure how cell morphology changes in subtle ways in each biological context. We can answer direct questions (e.g. are there compounds that rescues a disease-specific set of morphological changes), and over time as our dataset has increased, we can ask more complex questions across biology. From the outset, our approach is agnostic to preconceived notions and dogma in biology, enabling Recursion to operate in novel target space. Potential  treatments from this platform are then evaluated by our discovery biology team, who develop a literature-based understanding of the disease and use traditional wet-lab approaches to confirm and prioritize the hits.
