At Recursion, we combine experimental biology, automation and artificial intelligence to quickly and efficiently identify treatments for human diseases. Recursion is expanding its portfolio at an unparalleled speed by combining image-based unbiased phenotypic screens and deep learning. Hits emerging from partner libraries or our constantly growing small molecule repurposing and diversity cassettes undergo rapid hit expansion and lead generation, generated from our highly validated and automated screening platform. Our lead optimization and preclinical development efforts are then efficiently driven towards the IND stage by small and agile cross-functional teams. The Manager of Compound Management will partner with compound management scientists and lead all aspects of mass compound acquisition, storage and distribution in support of drug discovery at Recursion.  They will be responsible for integrating and maintaining a new state of the art compound storage/handling system and ensure strict quality standards and controls are in place as we expand capabilities into the future.

THE PROBLEMS YOU’LL SOLVE

The high-level job description has only one item: do whatever is necessary to achieve our mission of decoding biology to radically improve lives. In this role, you will act as the manager of Recursion’s compound collection maintaining inventory and supporting HTS and follow up activities on multiple programs. You will also contribute to our compound acquisition strategy and expansion of our small molecule libraries. This newly-created position will report to our VP of Chemistry and play a critical role in managing all aspects of compound management at Recursion.

We are looking for individuals who are:

  • Precise - We want detail oriented chemists with a knack for process improvement and an eye for spotting quality. You will need to source compounds from reputable vendors as well ensure the identity and purity of compounds and that compound integrity is monitored/maintained.
  • Organized - We want chemists who are obsessed with organization and systems. You will establish and maintain a state of the art compound management system to store and track the use of small molecules.
  • Collaborative - We want chemists who are interactive. This is a cross-functional role where you will engage with team members in High Throughput Screening, Biology, Chemistry, Data Science and Software Engineering.
  • Advise - You will act as a compound management/handling subject matter expert internally and partner with program teams to design processes in support of HTS activities.
  • Lead - As our company continues to grow, you will be part of a nimble, highly efficient top talent team leading the compound management group into the future.

THE EXPERIENCE YOU WILL NEED

  • Requires 4+ years of laboratory experience with a BS degree, or 2+ years with a Masters/PhD Degree (scientific discipline)
  • Experience with mass compound storage systems (tubes/plates), compound/sample management, screening automation, HTS, are highly desirable.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex scientific/process-related issues
  • Follow procedures to process customer compounds with high accuracy and validate new procedures to handle unique situations for which SOPs do not exist.
  • Asses, interpret, and react to variation in supplied samples to ensure standardization with internal procedures and informatics tools.
  • Must be able to multi-task in a fast-pace environment quickly addressing day-to-day issues and yet still remain focused on prioritized tasks.

THE PERKS YOU’LL ENJOY

  • Coverage of health, vision, and dental insurance premiums (in most cases 100%)
  • 401(k) with generous matching (immediate vesting)
  • Stock option grants
  • Two one-week paid company closures (summer and winter) in addition to flexible, generous vacation/sick leave
  • Commuter benefit and vehicle parking to ease your commute
  • Complimentary chef-prepared lunches and well-stocked snack bars
  • Generous paid parental leave (including adoptive)
  • Fully-paid gym membership to Metro Fitness, located just feet away from our new headquarters
  • Gleaming new 100,000 square foot headquarters complete with a 70-foot climbing wall, showers, lockers, and bike parking

WHAT WE DO

We start with various human cell types in our automated laboratory, where we perturb biology 100k different ways each week (e.g. model a disease of interest, add a chemical compound, or some combination of those). We image the resulting cells using high throughput microscopy, resulting in about 2 million new images or greater than 20 terabytes of data each week. These data are analyzed using computer vision and machine learning methods that help us measure how cell morphology changes in subtle ways in each biological context. We can answer direct questions (e.g. are there compounds that rescues a disease-specific set of morphological changes), and over time as our dataset has increased, we can ask more complex questions across biology. From the outset, our approach is agnostic to preconceived notions and dogma in biology, enabling Recursion to operate in novel target space. Potential  treatments from this platform are then evaluated by our discovery biology team, who develop a literature-based understanding of the disease and use traditional wet-lab approaches to confirm and prioritize the hits.
